As the 2023 Formula 1 season wrapped up in Abu Dhabi, all heads turn towards the 2024 campaign and the next few years of the sport, especially in the United States. With three American races, investors, power unit manufacturers, and an eleventh team on the grid, it’s apparent F1 is committed to a long-term presence in the states.

According to General Motors, the corporation has officially registered with the FIA as a Formula 1 power unit manufacturer starting in the 2028 season. Andretti Cadillac, which was approved to race in the FIA Formula One World Championship, will be powered by a GM power unit. General Motors President Mark Reuss stated, “With our deep engineering and racing expertise, we’re confident we’ll develop a successful power unit for the series, and position Andretti Cadillac as a true works team.”

With a long history of racing success, Cadillac most recently developed the 5.5L DOHC V-8 powertrain used in the 2023 IMSA and WEC seasons. With this powertrain, Cadillac Racing earned a podium finish at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Along with supercharged manufacturing, there has been a continued rise in American sports stars’ interest and investment in Formula 1. Kansas City Chiefs players Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce invested in Alpine Racing LTD. The duo joins Otro Capital, which already consists of actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, golf standout Rory McIlroy, soccer stars Trent Alexander-Arnold and Juan Mata, and boxer Anthony Joshua. Back in June 2023, Otro Capital was involved in a group that purchased a 24 percent stake in the team, with members of this investment team looking to expand the brand of Alpine F1 team.

There’s no doubt F1 continues to make it’s mark in the United States as fans look ahead to the 2024 Formula 1 season.
